The Aquaculture Department held a special educational workshop with about 20 career guidance teachers today, to showcase the different career opportunities that exist in the aquaculture sector. The one-day session was held at the Seychelles Maritime Academy.
The aim is to ensure that career guidance teachers are equipped with as much knowledge as possible so that they can better prepare and encourage students to choose a career in this developing industry.
The workshop is aligned with the recommendations made in the Human Capital Development Plan (HCDP) that was designed for the aquaculture sector. The HCDP is a 20-year projection of the human resource requirements of the aquaculture industry. It not only outlines the labor needs but also suggests ways to prepare the population to fit into these jobs.
Over the session, the participants got the chance to learn the life cycle of different species and how aquaculture facilitates the different stages. The participants also got the chance to ask questions about the entry requirement for students at SMA, how do the rearing of species work etc..
Ms Rose Mary Barra from the Careers Guidance section at the Ministry of Education and Ms Nadia Bouchereau from the Mont Fleuri secondary school were two teachers who participated in the workshop. Both expressed that they were unaware of opportunities this sector is bringing into our economy.
Ms Nadia Bouchereau, ‘This workshop has helped me to reflect on the importance on this industry and the role it plays in our economy, especially when we were hit with the Covid 19 pandemic.’
Ms. Rose Mary Barra, ‘We as teachers are now informed on the career opportunities that exists within this sector, and this will allow us to better inform the students in their career choices especially with the new investments within this sector and opportunities that will be developed in the coming years.
The session ended with a visit to the BAQF facility.
