As part of a pilot project, a sea cage site has been identified off the coast of Providence and close to the BAQF to hold fingerlings and carry out pilot-scale grow-out of marine finfish. Two “Polarcirkel” sea cages have been installed with the help of a Norwegian company. This will be used to prove the business case for marine finfish farming in Seychelles as well as studying environmental impacts of cage farming on the seabed.
The pilot project is an important one that will provide concrete evidence on the feasibility of aquaculture in Seychelles’ waters, and it is important that all stakeholders take part so that we can have a comprehensive document before its implementation.
