Live Feed production at the Broodstock Acclimation and Quarantine Facility (BAQF).

The Aquaculture Department of the Seychelles Fisheries Authority is currently conducting larval trials on the primary species housed in our facility. A key aspect of these trials is the provision of live feed, primarily consisting of phytoplankton and zooplankton which is essential for larval rearing.

Among the zooplankton species, Brachionus rotundiformis (commonly known as rotifer) is one of the most critical organisms used in larval rearing. These microscopic organisms play an essential role in the nutrition and development of larvae, making them a vital component in the success of our larval rearing trials.

Rotifers are particularly valuable due to their small size, which allows them to serve as a perfect live food source for the early stages of larvae.

At our facility, located at the Providence Port, Brachionus rotundiformis is a central species in our live feed production, ensuring the survival of the larvae under our care.

They are filter feeders and mostly feed on micro algae.

Why rotifers are important for aquaculture?

  • Newly hatched marine fish often have tiny mouths, limiting what they can eat. Rotifers, being small and soft-bodied, are the ideal size and texture for larval consumption during the critical early days of life.
  • Have good nutritional value.
  • High reproduction rate.
  • Easy to culture.

How are rotifers cultured?

The rotifers are cultured in large tanks with added aeration. They are primarily fed with micro algae and amplified feed.

Tetraselmis spp is a species of algae currently being cultivated at the BAQF which is the primary food source for the rotifers
