Two and a half years ago I felt that I needed a career change, and there came the opportunity to join the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) in the Aquaculture Department. Without a clue what aquaculture was all about I decided to take the challenge on this new adventure.
And there I was, part of a dynamic team within SFA. A team that was welcoming and eager to share their knowledge and experience. Being a fast learner, it did not take long for me to understand what aquaculture was all about and I became fascinated about it and wanted to know more. Aquaculture is vast and there is so much that one can learn and do in this sector.
I joined as an Office Manager and now I am currently holding the post of Aquaculture License Administrator. My duties are to ensure that all the administration aspect of the department runs smoothly and in accordance with the standards and procedures in place. I also have to meet with investors, provide guidance, assist with information with regards to the procedures that needs to be followed in order to obtain an Aquaculture license.
Being part of the Aquaculture team has surely been a great experience thus far. I now understand why Seychelles needs to sustainably develop aquaculture for the country’s economic diversification.
One important thing that I have learned is that if we want our future generations to be acquainted to some of the marine species that is currently in existence, one way we can make that happen is through the continuous effort in promoting and developing aquaculture not only here in Seychelles but across the world.
Aquaculture in Seychelles has the potential to expand, creating career opportunities for our people and most importantly it has the potential to become a pillar of our economy. The Aquaculture Sector in Seychelles was officially launched in October 2021, and I am proud to say that I was part of that team.
