Danilla Adonis

Aquaculture Research Technician

Give an overview of your experience in the Aquaculture Department.

“One thing I get asked a lot by friends and family is, “What do you actually do at work?” My response is anything to do with farming and animals and no two days are the same. Plans have a habit of changing hour to hour where I am learning new things everyday. I joined the Aquaculture team on the 1st of October 2018, and I was enthusiastic to join the sector. Whilst I was doing my research on aquaculture, I found out that there were many prospects in this field, thus, I applied for the aquaculture technicians post and I was successful.
In May 2020 I was transferred to the Aquaculture Research section SURF (Sea Urchin & Research Facility). Part of our task is the daily observation of the sea urchin’s behaviour and feeding pattern, which allows early detection of problems when they occur so that a diagnosis can be made before the majority of the sea urchin becomes sick. Arguably the most important job at the SURF is monitoring the oxygen level in the tanks and Raceway and it’s probably one of the only thing that remains constant daily, without any fail. Apart from that we have other duties such as cleaning Raceway and tanks, doing research and experiments on different type of algaes and seaweed, collect various samples and data entry. There is no such thing as an average day in this job.”

What are your goals for the future?

“My goals for the future are to increase my productivity, the need to succeed in aquaculture, to obtain a degree in aquaculture and to visit many aquaculture farms.”
