As part of the Human Capital Development Plan for the Aquaculture Sector, 7 Aquaculture Staff and 1 Research Technician participated in a 2 weeks training course on Marine Finfish Seed Production and Grow-out form the 19th to 30th November 2018. The training was held at the Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center 4, Krabi, Thailand and was organized by Network of Aquaculture Centre in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and requested by the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA).
The training consisted of both theory and practical work and it was mainly focused on the production of grouper and ornamental fish. Some of the most interesting topics covered were how to grade grouper fingerlings, which is essential in ensuring that smaller fish are separated from bigger ones to allow them to grow better and remain healthy. Participants also learned the technique of how to calculate and prepare hormone dosage for broodstock as well as injecting the broodstock with the hormone to induce spawning. Induced spawning is one of the common methods to stimulate ovulation of fish in the hatchery.
Overall the training was very fruitful and memorable. It was very informative and we gained a lot of hands-on experience. The knowledge I’ve gained in regards on how to handle the grouper broodstock and fingerlings will be very useful since this will be one of the species we are planning to start the industry with in the Seychelles.
